You don't need a calculator to turn kilograms into stone and pounds, although it helps. All you need to remember is one number: 6.35. That's how many kilograms are in a stone.

The three steps

  1. Divide the kilograms by 6.35. This gives your weight in stone, with a decimal.
  2. Keep the whole number. That's your stone.
  3. Multiply the decimal part by 14. That's the leftover pounds, because a stone is 14 pounds.

Worked example: 80 kg

80 ÷ 6.35 = 12.60. The whole number is 12, so that's 12 stone. The decimal part is 0.60, and 0.60 × 14 = 8.4. So 80 kg is 12 st 8.4 lb.

Worked example: 63 kg

63 ÷ 6.35 = 9.92. That's 9 stone, and 0.92 × 14 = 12.9 pounds. So 63 kg is 9 st 12.9 lb, which is very close to 10 stone.

A shortcut you can do in your head

If you only need a rough answer, multiply the kilograms by 0.16 instead. For 75 kg, 75 × 0.16 = 12 stone. The real answer is 11 st 11.3 lb, so the shortcut lands close enough for a quick check.

Another route is to go through pounds. Multiply kilograms by 2.2 to get pounds, then divide by 14 to get stone. For 70 kg: 70 × 2.2 = 154 lb, and 154 ÷ 14 = 11 stone exactly. The precise answer is 11 st 0.3 lb.

Common mistakes

  • Reading the decimal as pounds. 12.6 stone is not 12 stone 6 pounds. The 0.6 must be multiplied by 14, giving 8.4 pounds.
  • Using 6 instead of 6.35. Rounding down this far makes heavier weights noticeably wrong. At 100 kg, dividing by 6 gives 16.7 stone instead of the real 15.7.
  • Forgetting pounds can't go above 13. If you get 14 pounds or more, add one to the stone and take 14 off the pounds.
