Most bathroom scales can show kilograms, pounds or stone. If yours shows the wrong unit, it usually takes a few seconds to change. The exact steps depend on the type of scale.

Standard digital bathroom scales

Most digital scales, including many Salter models, have a small unit button or switch.

  1. Turn the scale over and look on the back or underneath, often near the battery cover.
  2. Press the button, usually marked "UNIT", "kg/lb/st" or with a small symbol.
  3. Each press moves to the next unit. Stop when the display shows "st" or "st lb".
  4. Step on the scale to check. Many scales remember the unit until you change it again.

Some scales have the button on the front, and some switch units if you press the platform while the display is showing. If you can't find it, check the model number on the label and search for its manual.

Smart scales with an app (Renpho, Fitbit and others)

Smart scales that connect to your phone usually take their unit from the app, not from a button on the scale.

  1. Open the scale's app on your phone.
  2. Go to the settings or profile area. Look for an option called "Units", "Unit of measure" or "Weight unit".
  3. Choose stone (often shown as "st" or "st lb").
  4. Step on the scale with the app open so it syncs the new setting.

Menu names change between app versions, so if you can't see "Units", look under general settings or device settings.

Fitness and food-tracking apps

Apps that track your weight, such as food diaries and fitness apps, have their own unit setting. Changing the scale doesn't always change the app, so set both to the same unit to avoid confusing numbers.

Mechanical (dial) scales

Dial scales can't be switched. Many show both kilograms and stone on the same dial, usually on an inner and outer ring. If yours only shows kilograms, use our kg to stone calculator to convert the reading.
