Body mass index (BMI) is the most common way to check whether your weight is in a healthy range for your height. For most adults, the NHS describes a BMI of 18.5 to 24.9 as the healthy weight range.
The table below turns that range into stone and pounds and kilograms for common heights, so you don't need to do the maths.
Healthy weight range by height

| 4 ft 10 in | 147 cm | 6 st 4.5 lb to 8 st 7.1 lb | 40 to 54 kg |

The ranges are worked out from a BMI of 18.5 to 24.9 and rounded. Your height is converted at 2.54 cm per inch.
Who this doesn't apply to
BMI is a simple screening tool and has limits. It isn't used in the same way for:
- Children and teenagers, whose BMI is compared with others of the same age and sex.
- Pregnant women.
- Very muscular people, such as athletes, whose BMI can be high without extra body fat.
- People from some ethnic backgrounds, including South Asian, Chinese, Black African and African-Caribbean backgrounds, for whom the NHS uses a lower BMI threshold to flag health risks.
