Why 5% and 10%?

Many weight management programmes, including NHS services, use 5% and 10% of your starting weight as first targets. They're realistic steps that are easier to reach than one big goal, and you can set a new target each time you get there.

The NHS suggests losing weight gradually, at around 0.5 to 1 kg (1 to 2 lb) a week. When you add a goal weight, the calculator estimates how long it might take at that pace.
